So…what do you consider to be ‘sexy music’? Like, what music gets you in mood?
Please, accept my apology if I’m being too forward. This isn’t about you, per se. It’s not like I’m making a mixtape for you/us, and I will not misuse these tunes to get you into bed. That’d be weird, right? Read More…

Artist: Christmas Island
Album: Blackout Summer
Label: In the Red
Release Date: October 6th, 2009
RIYL: Thee Oh Sees, Crystal Stilts, Harlem, Mark Sultan
Halflife: I can guarantee this will last the year, and it has this quality to keep appearing on mixtapes…I’ll say 22 listens over the next 12 months. At least.
I’m tired of hearing myself find new ways of reconfiguring saying ’sunny’ ‘garage’ and ‘lo-fi,’ so I’ll let In the Red’s description of Christmas Island fill that part. So first we’ll shamelessly crib that from their website, then I’ll explain why I wanna talk about this record: Read More…

“The End of Broken Hearts” Cavaliers!
I’m a fool. I was reviewing a Chuck Ragan concert in Ottawa the other night, and after my interview with him in the dingy corners of Mavericks nightclub, I ducked out for a coffee during the opening sets. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
As I was sipping sub-par Second Cup coffee and watching the homeless man on the corner play a tin flute for small change dropped into a rolled sock, Cavaliers! were playing inside. And I was none the wiser.
Fortunately, I ambled to the side of the stage for the two sets to follow (Tim Barry of Avail, and Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music) so I was perfectly poised when Cavaliers! took the stage for a rousing encore. (Incidentally, I was also perfectly poised when Tim Barry kicked the living shit out of an inconsiderate heckler on stage, but that’s another story for another time, my friends.) Read More…

Artist: Jarrod Gorbel
Album: Ten Years Older EP
Release Date: January 19, 2010
Half Life: If you have never listened to The Honorary Title, the tracks on the Ten Years Older EP serve as a great introduction to frontman Jarrod Gorbel’s woe-filled acoustic stylings. For Die-hard’s, it amounts to little more than a tease until he releases a full length.
RIYL: The Honorary Title, Rocky Votolato, The Format.
While doing press for The Honorary Title’s 2007 release (and major label début) Scream and Light Up The Sky frontman Jarrod Gorbel stated that the album “was much more of a band oriented record,” rather than his and multi-instrumentalist Aaron Kamstra’s more acoustic driven début. Well, fast-forward to 2010 and Jarrod has decided that the band wasn’t necessarily the way to go. Going back to his roots with little more than his stories of heartbreak and an acoustic guitar, the Ten Years Older EP is his first release as a solo artist. The EP harkens back to the style of what made 2004’s Anything Else But the Truth such an intriguing listen. It features minimal production values and instrumentation, driven solely by Gorbel’s melancholy hooks and simple piano melodies. Read More…
